Basic Introduction:
The Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu devotional hymn addressed to Lord Hanuman.
It is traditionally believed to have been authored by 16th-century poet
Tulsidas in the Awadhi language, and is his best known text apart from the
Ramcharitmanas.
Total Verses: 40
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर ।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर ।। १ ।।
Jai Hanuman Gyan Guna Sagar
Jai Kipis Tihun Lok Ujgaar
"Victory
to Hanuman who is the ocean of Wisdom and Virtues, Victory to the king of Monkeys who is
illuminating three worlds"
राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा ।
अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा ।। २ ।।
Ramdoot Atulit Bal Dhamaa,
Anjani Putra Pavansut naamaa.
"You
are the messenger of Rama (to Sita), You are the abode of incomparable power.
You are also called by the names of 'Anjani Putra' (Son of Anjana) and 'Pavana
suta' (son of wind god)"
महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी ।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी ।। ३ ।।
Mahebeer Bikram Bajrangi,
Kumati Nivaar Sumati Ke Sangi.
"Oh mighty
valorous one, of terrific deeds whose body organs are as strong as Diamond (or
the weapon of God Indra). Cure my bad mind oh companion of those with pure
(good) mind"
कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा ।
कानन कुंडल कुंचति केसा ।। ४ ।।
Kanchan Baran Biraaj Subesaa,
Kanan kundal kunchit kesa.
"You
are golden colored, you are shining in your beautiful attire. You have
beautiful ear-rings in your ear and curly hairs"
हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै ।
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै ।। ५ ।।
Hath Bajra Aur Dhvaja Birjai,
Kandhe Moonj Janeu saage.
"Vajrayudha
(mace) and flag are shining in your hand. Sacred thread made of Munja grass
adorns your shoulder"
संकर सुवन केसरीनंदन ।
तेज प्रताप महा जग बंदन ।। ६ ।।
Shankar Suvna Kesari Nandan,
Tej Pratap Maha Jag Vandan.
"O
partial incarnation of Lord shiva, giver of joy to King Kesari. Your great
majesty is revered by the whole world"
बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर ।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर ।। ७ ।।
Vidyavaan Guni Ati Chatur,
Ram Kaj Karibe Ko Atur
"Oh one
learned in all Vidyas, one full of virtues, Very clever. You are always eager
to do Rama's tasks"
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया ।
राम लखन सीता मन बसिया ।। ८ ।।
Prabhu Charittra Sunibe Ko Rasiya,
Ram Lakhan Sita man basyia.
"You
enjoy listening to Lord Rama's story; Lord Rama, Lakshman and Sita reside in
your heart"
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा ।
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा ।। ९ ।।
Sukshma roop Dhari Siyahi Dikhwana,
Bikat roop Dhari Lank Jarawa
"Assuming
the smallest form you saw (visited) Sita. Assuming the gigantic form you burnt
down the Lanka"
भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे ।
रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे ।। १० ।।
Bhim roop Dhari Asur Sanhare,
Ramchandra Ke kaaj Savare.
"Assuming
a terrible form you slayed demons. You made Lord Rama's works easier"
लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये ।
श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाये ।। ११ ।।
Laye Sajivan Lakhan Jiyaye,
Shri Raghubir harashi ur laye.
"You
brought Sanjeevini mountain to save Lakshmana's Life. Lord Rama embraced you in
joy"
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बडाई ।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई ।। १२ ।।
Raghupati Kinhi Bahut Badaai,
Tum Mama Priya Bharat Sam Bahi.
"Lord
Rama praised you very much saying 'You are dear to me like my brother
Bharata'"
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं ।
अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं ।। १३ ।।
Sahastra Badan Tumharo Jas Gaave,
Asa kahi Shripati Kanth Laagave.
"'May
the thousand headed serpent Adishesha sing of your glory' saying this Lord Rama
embraced you"
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा ।
नारद सारद सहित अहीसा ।। १४ ।।
Sankadik Brahmadi Muneesa,
Narad Sarad Sahit Aheesa
"Sanaka,
Brahma and other Royal sages, Narad, Saraswati and Adisheshe
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते ।
कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते ।। १५ ।।
Jam Kuber Digpal Jahan Te,
Kabi Kabid Kahin Sake Kahan Te
"Yama,
Kubera, Dikpaalakas, poets and singers; they can not describe your greatness
properly"
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा ।
राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा ।। १६ ।।
Tum Upkar Sugrivahi Keenha,
Ram Miali Ra pad Deenha
"You
helped Sugreeva. You made him friends with Rama which gave him his Kingship
back"
तुम्हरो मन्त्र बिभीषन माना ।
लंकेस्वर भए सब जग जाना ।। १७ ।।
Tumharo Mantro Bibhishan Maana,
Lankeshwar Bhaye Sab Jag Jaana.
"Vibheeshana
accepted your Suggestion. He became the king of Lanka because of your advice,
whole world knows it"
जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू ।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू ।। १८ ।।
Juug Sahastra Jojan Par Bhaanu,
Leelyo Taahi Madhur Phal Jaanu
"You
flew towards the sun who is thousands of years of Yojanas away, thinking of him
as a sweet fruit"
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं ।
जलधि लांघि गये अचरज नाहीं ।। १९ ।।
Prabhu Mudrika Meli Mukha Maaheen,
Jaladhi Langhi Gaye Acharaj Naheen.
"Putting
the ring of Rama in your mouth, you jumped and flew over Ocean to Lanka, there
is no surprise in that"
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते ।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ।। २० ।।
Durgam Kaaj Jagat Ke Jeete,
sugam Anugrah Tumhre Te Te.
"All
the difficult tasks in the world, become easy if there is your grace"
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे ।
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे ।। २१ ।।
Ram Duware Tum Rakhavare,
Hot Na Aagya Bin Paisare.
"Your
the doorkeeper of Rama's court. Without your permission nobody can enter Rama's
abode"
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना ।
तुम रच्छक काहू को डर ना ।। २२ ।।
Sab Sukh Lahen Tumhari Sarna,
Tum Rakshak Kaahu Ko Darnaa.
"All
happiness stay with those who take refuge in you. You are the protector, why be
afraid? "
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै ।
तीनों लोक हाँक ते काँपै ।। २३ ।।
Aapan Tej Samharo Aapei,
Tanau Lok Hank Te Kanpei
"Only
you can cancel your powers. All three worlds tremble in fear"
भूत पिसाच निकट नहिं आवै ।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै ।। २४ ।।
Bhoot Pisaach Nikat Nahi Avei,
Mahabir Jab Naam Sunavei.
"Evil
Spirits and Ghosts don't come near when your name is heard O great Courageous
one"
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा ।
जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा ।। २५ ।।
Nasei Rog Hare Sab Peera,
Japat Niranter Hanumant Beera
"Diseases
will be ended, all pains will be gone, when a devotee continuously repeats
Hanuman the brave's name"
संकट तें हनुमान छुडावै ।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै ।। २६ ।।
Sankat Te Hanuman Chhudavei,
Man Kram Bachan Dhyan Jo Lavei.
"Hanuman
will release those from troubles who meditate upon him in their mind, actions
and words"
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा ।
तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा ।। २७ ।।
Sub Par Ram Tapasvee Raaja,
Tinke Kaaj Sakal Tum Saaja
"Rama
is the king of all, he is the king of yogis. You managed all his tasks" or
in other translation "He whoever takes refuge in Rama you will manage all
their tasks"
और मनोरथ जो कोइ लावै ।
सोइ अमित जीवन फल पावै ।। २८ ।।
Aur Manorath Jo Koi Lave,
Soi Amit Jivan Phal Pave.
"Whoever
brings many of their wishes to you, they will get unlimited fruits"
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा ।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा ।। २९ ।।
Charo Juung Partap Tumhara,
Hai Parsiddha Jagat Ujiyara.
"Your
glory is for all the four yugas, Your greatness is very famous throughout the
world, and illumines the world"
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे ।
असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे ।। ३० ।।
Sadho Sant Ke Tum Rakhvare,
Asur Nikandan Ram Dulare.
"You
are the guardian of Saints and Good people. You killed demons and you are dear
to Rama"
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता ।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता ।। ३१ ।।
Ashta Siddhi Nau Nidhi Ke Data,
Asa Bar Din Janki Mata.
"Mother
Sita granted you a boon to become the bestower of 8 Siddhis (supernatural
powers) and 9 Nidhis (divine treasures)"
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा ।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा ।। ३२ ।।
Ram Rasayan Tumhare Pasa,
Sadaa Raho Raghupati Ke Dasa.
"You
have the sweet devotion to Rama. May you always be a devotee of Lord Rama"
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै ।
जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै ।। ३३ ।।
Tumhare Bhajan Ramko Pavei.
Janam Janam Ke Dukh Bisravei.
"Singing
your name gets us Rama himself and Removes the sufferings of many lives"
अंत काल रघुबर पुर जाई ।
जहाँ जन्म हरि-भक्त कहाई ।। ३४ ।।
Anta Kaal Raghubar Pur Jai,
Jahan Janma Hari Bhakta Kahai.
"He
who sings of you, at the end of the life he attains to Lord Rama's abode. Where
he will be born as a Devotee of Lord Rama"
और देवता चित्त न धरई ।
हनुमत सेइ सर्ब सुख करई ।। ३५ ।।
Aur Devata Chitt Na Dharai,
Hanumant Sei Sarva Sukh Karai
"Not
contemplating on other gods, gets his all happiness from Hanuman by serving
him"
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा ।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा ।। ३६ ।।
Sankat Kate Mitey Sab Peera,
Jo Sumirei Hanumant Balbeera
"Pains
will be removed, all afflictions will be gone of who remembers Hanuman the
mighty brave one"
जै जै जै हनुमान गोसाई ।
कृपा करहु गुरु देव की नाई ।। ३७ ।।
Jai Jai Jai Hanuman Gosai
Kripa Karahu Gurudev Ki Naiee
Jaya
jaya jaya hanumāna gosāī
kripā
karahu gurudeva kī nāī
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई ।
छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई ।। ३८ ।।
Jo Sat Baar Paath Kar Koi,
Chhutahi Bandi Maha Sukh Hoi.
"He
whoever recits this hundred times, his chains of Bondage will be cut, Great
happiness will be his"
जो यह पढै हनुमानचालीसा ।
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा ।। ३९ ।।
Jo Yah Padhe Hanuman Chalisa,
Hoy Siddhi Sakhi Gaurisa
"He
whoever reads these verses on Hanuman, he will get spiritual attainments, Lord
Shiva is the witness to this statement"
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा ।
कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा ।। ४० ।।
Tulsidas Sada Hari Chera,
Keeje Nath Hriday Mah Dera.
"Tulasidas
is always a disciple of Lord Rama. O lord make my heart your abode"
